Florentine Sonnets

Florentine Art

See Giotto's fairy campanile spring,
Fair as a lovely flower, to kiss the skies:
No nobler structure ever may arise
To glorify the builders. Art was king
In Florence, and the wondrous fashioning
Of his fair city still delights our eyes -
His Florence built when beauty was the prize
Most worthy life's large thought and laboring;

When labor was made pleasure by the skill
With which its daily handicraft was done.
Oh, those old days, a golden lesson, bring
To our declining art: that he, who will,
May find the way, the Florentine once won,
To make his art a fair and glorious thing!

Florentiner Kunst

Seht Giottos Glockenturm gen Himmel ragen
wie eine Blume hoch ins Blau zu blühen
Kein Bauwerk kann des Baumeisters Bemühen
Mehr adeln als wohl so. In jenen Tagen
war Kunst die Gottheit. Schätze wie aus Sagen
lassen noch heute jeden Blick erglühen,
und alle Werke in Florenz versprühen
den Schöpferfunken. Er kennt keine Fragen

nach Schweiß und Mühe, adelt die Verrichtung
des Tagewerks bis in die Nacht hinein.
Wir lernen daraus Weg und Richtung
für Kunst, die krankt. Da muss ein Wille sein,
lehrt die Historie, nur dann erheben
wir einst wie Florentiner Kunst zum Leben.
