James Clarence Mangan (1803-1849): The World: A Ghazel - Josef Riga - 31.07.2018

James Clarence Mangan (1803-1849)

The World: a Ghazel

To this khan, and from this khan
How many pilgrims came and went to!
In this khan, and by this khan
What arts were spent, what hearts were rent too!
To this khan and from this khan
(Which for penance, man is sent to)
Many a van and caravan
Crowded came, and shrouded went too.
Christian man and Mussulman,
Guebre, heathen, Jew, and Gentoo,
To this khan, and from this khan,
Weeping came, and sleeping went too.
A riddle this since time began,
Which many a sage his mind hath bent to:
All came, all went; but never man
Knew whence they came, or where they went to!

Die Welt. Ein Ghasel

Hin zum Khan, und weg vom Khan,
Wie viele Pilger kamen, gingen!
In dem Khan, und durch den Khan,
Wieviel Kunst- und Herz-Darbringen!
Hin zum Khan, und weg vom Khan,
(Um Vergebung Menschen ringen).
Manche lange Karawan’
Sieht man, kopfstark, dort hin dringen.
Christenvolk und Muselman,
Parse, Heide, Jude gingen.
Hin zum Khan, und weg vom Khan,
Manches Weinen, Schlafen, Singen.
Ein Rätsel seit die Zeit begann,
So mancher Weise wollt’s durchdringen:
Den Anfang sah niemals ein Mann,
Und keiner weiß, wohin sie gingen!
