Soul of the far but unforgotten past!
Queen of the sword an lady of the lyre!
Spirit of thoughts too high, of deets too vast,
To fear, like clay, the waste of flood and fire,

Or darkly perish on oblivions’s pyre-
Whence, like the birds from Memnon’s pile, they spring
Born from the dust, but not with years to tire,
Or furl in death the everlasting wing!

Teach me, Oh! teach me, but for once to fling
My hand thy own triumphal harp along –
To strike one strain whose echoes yet may ring

Above the spot where rests a friend of song! –
Do I but dream the laurel yet may wave
Memorial verdure over its votary’s grave?

Du Seele unserer Vergangenheit,
Königin von Kunst und Klingenstahl,
mit hohem Geist zu großer Tat bereit;
Wie Feuer fürchtet man dich allemal,

wie’n allvergessenmachendes Fanal.
Woher? – Wie aus der Memnon-Stelen Vögel
staubgebor’n, stehst du noch triumphal,
im Tod nur eingeschlagen deine Flügel!

Lehre mich, oh, lehr’ mich meine Hand,
wie du, die rechte Saite anzuschlagen,
daß sie auch echot aus der Schweigens-Wand,

und über jeden Spott hinwegzutragen
deine Ehre, bis dir Lorbeer winkt.
Dein Ruhm besteht, wenn alles andre sinkt.
